Water is one of the most important components for life, and because of this it’s critical to look at the quality and type of water you put into your body. It is important to note that water makes up about 60 percent of the average body weight. Every system in the human body depends on water. Examples of this dependence would be water flushing toxins out of vital organs, carrying nutrients to cells and providing a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues. [Link]

A trip to any grocery store will exemplify how businesses have capitalized on water sales, as there are a large variety of brands and sources. Amongst this varied selection, alkaline water has become more popular and prominent. As its popularity increases, more companies are vying for the opportunity to promote this specific type of water. Given that water is essential for life, health and well-being, we wanted to take this opportunity to present some information about alkaline water.

What is alkaline water?

Water that is classified as alkaline possesses a pH level greater than 7; it is also commonly known as “ionized” water. This is important because the body exerts energy in maintaining a balanced pH level, and it is preferable to be at a 7 or higher. Anything less than 7 is considered acidic. When the level of acids in the body becomes too great, systemic issues take place and can create a toxic internal environment. There are a number of diseases which can potentially result when the pH level of the body is too acidic—including arthritis, osteoporosis and kidney disease.

How is alkaline water made?

There are multiple ways to make alkaline water, and while buying it at the store is the most convenient, there are methods that can be done at home to create your own. Before changing the pH of the water, it’s important to know what the existing level is. This can be accomplished using pH strips. Being able to monitor the changes is essential and will provide you with the necessary information as to how much or how little alteration needs to be made.

The following materials can be added to water to modify its pH level and make it more alkaline: baking soda, lemon juice and pH drops. Baking soda has a high alkaline content and when it mixes with water, it has the ability to raise the pH level. Lemons contain negatively charged ions and are therefore considered to be anionic. When lemon water is consumed and digested, the anionic quality of the lemons will make the water alkaline. pH drops are highly concentrated and contain alkaline minerals which will alter the pH levels of the water into which they are diluted. These drops can be purchased on the Internet or in any health food store.

In part 2 of this series we continue to discuss alkaline water and it’s benefits to your health and wellbeing.
