How can I lead a more balanced life?

Many patients ask how they can lead a more balanced life. The first step towards achieving this goal is to clearly identify what might be causing the lack of balance. This will require a considerable amount of honesty and clarity; being able to see how specific behaviors and actions have led to a life full of distractions can be quite challenging. It will also require visualizing how different life will be when existing in a more balanced state. This vision of a balanced life is essential, as it will make it possible for the goal to be achieved. Once clarity and vision have been achieved, it becomes possible to use tools to work toward living a life that is more balanced and peaceful.

The first tool, which many people use on a daily basis, is meditation. In a previous blog post titled “The Many Benefits of Meditation” we discussed what meditation is and we also provided some examples of the different styles that exist. This is by far the most useful tool when seeking balance, as it allows for quiet introspection, balance and inner peace. It is important to note that meditation is a subjective practice; finding a style that works best for you is important. The amount of time spent in a meditative state is also subjective. Some days you might get five minutes, while other days you might be able to meditate for twenty. Regardless of the duration, it is the effort that counts—which is why a daily practice is an essential tool when striving for a more balanced life.

Being present is a powerful tool that can be used to help bring balance to life. In a previous blog post titled “The Power Of Being Present” we provided information that empowers people to stop thinking about the past and stop worrying about the future. By having a better understanding of your thought patterns—and being able to identify when your mind wanders into the past or present—you gain the ability to live in the moment and be present. This type of living provides clarity and meaning. It allows for an awareness to take place where you are no longer controlled by memories that don’t serve you.

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine are holistic tools that can help to provide internal harmony and balance to the body, mind and spirit. Eastern medicine’s primary objective is to assist the body in maintaining balance; and since the emotions and physical body are directly connected, achieving a state of inner and outer harmony and balance is possible. While getting weekly acupuncture treatments would be the most effective and efficient way to achieve balance, bi-weekly or monthly sessions would also be sufficient. Given that acupuncture can have a cumulative effect, it could take a few treatments to help the body become more balanced; but with continued efforts, it will become possible.
