Do you talk without thinking? Do you use negative words? Do you use self-deprecating humor? Do the words you use make you feel better or worse? Do you pay attention to the words other people use—but not your own? The answers to these questions are very important to note and lead us to look at the words we use and why we should be watching them more closely.

Why should I watch my words?

Words, and the context in which they are used, provide meaning to our lives and create the possibility of communication. Not only should we value the type of communication we have with the outside world, but it’s also vital to look at our internal dialogue. Many times people will only look at their interactions with other people, setting aside the communication that takes place inside their own mind.

So why should you watch your words? The answer to that question is that words create your reality. What this means is that, depending on the types of words you use—internally and externally—you will create a life that is an exact mirror of the words and dialogue that are taking place.

When you use negative descriptors like ugly, disgusting, horrible, terrible and repugnant, you not only see how they make you feel inside, but you also start to see people, places and things in your life that are a direct match to these words. When you use restrictive words like can’t, won’t and never, your reality will be limited based on these confining terms and the context in which they are used. By using positive, loving, supportive and constructive words instead of negative and restrictive ones, your reality can become peaceful, harmonious and full of positive potential.

Many people use self-deprecating humor as a way to joke around. These types of jokes are made about themselves and are often quite disparaging. What is not properly understood is that making these kinds of remarks can turn the humor into reality. Since the words included within these jokes are negative, limiting and self-defeating, your reality will become a mirror to these words. Instead of using this type of humor—which can have a negative effect on your reality—try using jokes that are positive and uplifting.

Our intention with this blog is to raise awareness of the fact that words contain tremendous power and have the ability to alter lives in a very profound way. Being conscious of this fact enables people to be more careful of the words they are using in their conversations with others as well as the internal conversation that takes place.

In a previous blog post titled “Reframing Your Words To Reframe Your Reality,” we introduced a very useful tool that has the ability to improve your life by reframing the words you use. This article provided specific information about what reframing is, how it can be used, and how beneficial it is when implemented. By watching your words and employing the reframing technique, you will see how quickly life can become more positive, peaceful and harmonious.
