The Pursuit Of Balance – Part 1

Key Takeaways

  • Modern life bombards individuals with stimuli, leading to a lack of internal peace and potential addiction to distractions.
  • Research shows many people prefer self-harm over sitting quietly with their thoughts, highlighting the struggle for internal stillness.
  • Achieving balance requires understanding how daily activities contribute to one’s state of mind and sense of harmony.
  • Identifying where attention and energy are spent is crucial for recognizing imbalances in life.
  • The Pursuit Of Balance involves seeking greater internal peace amidst external chaos.

Living in the 21st century entails being exposed to a variety of sensations, including auditory, visual and tactile. Being constantly bombarded and distracted throughout the day can create an internal state of disharmony and possibly a chaotic state of being. From this state of unease the mind can become addicted to the variety of stimuli, always seeking more and more exposure. With a mind that is not at peace, decision-making and thought processes can become convoluted and disjointed. This description of modern society is one that truly exemplifies a clear lack of balance and peace. It also provides indicators that addiction to external stimulus is a significant problem that can lead to a variety of internal disharmonies.

Recently, researchers at the University of Virginia and Harvard University conducted eleven different experiments to see how volunteers reacted to being without external stimulus.[Link] In one experiment individuals were asked to sit alone in a room with no phone and no writing or reading materials—and then report on what it was like to be by themselves with nothing more than their own thoughts for between six and fifteen minutes. Not surprisingly, about half of the participants found the experience to be rather unpleasant.

In another experiment, researchers placed volunteers in that same room for fifteen minutes—but this time provided the option to shock themselves if they desired. Two-thirds of the male subjects and one-fourth of the female subjects chose to shock themselves, apparently deciding it was a more desirable experience than just being alone with their thoughts. The results provided clear evidence that many people would rather hurt themselves than be without any external stimulus.

This research study was extremely useful, exemplifying how far the pendulum has swung away from internal stillness. There has never been a greater time for our society to seek balance, to look for a way to achieve a state of internal peace while living in a world filled with external stimuli.

What does balance mean?

Many patients at Above & Beyond Acupuncture desire balance but are unsure of how to achieve this state of being. Before we delve into the “how,” it’s important to have a proper definition of the word.

The Merriam Webster dictionary defines balance as “a state in which different things occur in equal or proper amounts or have an equal or proper amount of importance.” “Balance.” Merriam-Webster.com. Merriam-Webster, n.d. Web. 6 July 2014.[Link]

Is my life unbalanced?

Before an individual can learn how to live a more balanced life, it is necessary to assess one’s current situation, taking note of where attention and energy are being spent. Many times people are unaware of their daily routines and energy expenditures, which is why it’s so important to get a better vantage point and gain perspective on any imbalances taking place. Watching television, playing video games, texting, talking on the phone and many other activities can prove to be considerable distractions and can create an unbalanced life. It is important to take note of how much time is being allocated to specific activities taking place throughout the day. If you find there is a significant lack of focus on seeking inner peace and quiet in your schedule, a clear imbalance exists.
